Energy Sector: 70% of Total Inflow and Key in Foreign Investment

Myanmar has attracted more than USD 5.4 billion in foreign investment within over two years since the coup. Of these, 70 percent (approximately USD 4 billion) is directed to the energy sector. The extent of foreign investment in the energy sector includes USD 2.5 billion - part of China's Mee Lin Gyaing LNG Power project, which was approved in May 2021.

SAC’s Offensive Operations Ramp Up in Shan and Kayah States

The State Administration Council (SAC) imposed martial law two years since the coup and stepped up their offensives in areas where there was substantial resistance. The frequency of airstrikes increased as fighting between the military and local resistance forces grew more intense in Kayah State, Southern Shan State, Kayin State, Chin State, and the Sagaing Region. Battles between armed forces are occurring more frequently and throughout wider geographic areas because of the military's offensives. ISP-Myanmar will highlight and provide a brief explanation of battles between Karenni resistance forces and the military that took place in Shan and Kayah States.

Within a few days, the Allied forces had seized four towns, including Chinshwehaw, on the China-Myanmar border, and claimed control of Hsenwi.

Situation Report on ‘Operation 1027’ and China’s Investment Projects

Since the launch of ‘Operation 1027,’ the Three Brotherhood Alliance (3BHA) has captured territories in northern Shan State where several of China’s projects are located. Policy Recommendations for Solving the Challenges of the COVID-19 Third Wave Using International Humanitarian Assistance

Only if everyone comes together to solve the pandemic that Myanmar is currently facing will the country be able to lessen the physical and mental trauma that will be experienced for generations. Humanitarian crises could stem from politics or could become worse because of politics. Therefore, the solution to the humanitarian crisis should eventually transition from a humanitarian emergency to more sustained solutions for the political crisis. Good examples of humanitarian response can be seen in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami and in Nepal after 2015 earthquake. Even if political solutions cannot be found immediately, all stakeholders should follow the recommendations mentioned above quickly since these will provide major support in saving people’s lives during the COVID-19 third wave in Myanmar.
