On Friday, June 12, 2026, Chinese authorities officially announced the detention of American analyst Min Zhen, co-founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy in Burma (ISP-Myanmar). He was detained in Kunming, China, on suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that threaten Chinese national security. The US Consulate General in Guangzhou, China, was notified. Min Zhen’s formal arrest by Chinese authorities occurred on June 3, 2026, in Yunnan Province, China, which borders Myanmar.

Min Zin, the founder of the policy research organization ISP Myanmar, which focuses on issues related to Myanmar, was reportedly arrested by Chinese police in Kunming, China, on June 3 on accusations of espionage and endangering national security. News of the arrest emerged on June 12, and the Chinese government confirmed the detention.

A political scientist and UC Berkeley alumnus has been arrested in China and accused of spying.

The State Department confirmed that Min Zin, a United States citizen, was arrested during a trip to the Yunnan Province in southwestern China, and said that U.S. consular officers had visited him. He was arrested at a Kunming airport on June 3 after accepting an invitation from a Chinese academic institution, NPR reported, citing anonymous sources.
